Nearly 10% of all French think they have a hearing loss. Of those who say they have a hearing loss 45% use hearing aids. Most of them use two hearing aids, according to the survey EuroTrak France 2022.
The survey EuroTrak France 2022 finds that 9.7% of all French have a hearing loss. Among those 18 or older 11.9% say they have a hearing loss. Among the French aged 74 years or older, one in three (33%) say they have a hearing loss.
The number of people who think they have a hearing loss is quite similar to the other EuroTrak surveys that have been carried out in other European Countries in the recent years.
Increase in the use of hearing aids
45.7% of those who said that they had a hearing loss used hearing aids. In the survey made in 2018 the percentage was 41.0%. This is a growth in the share of users among people with hearing loss of around 10% in four years. 73% of those who use hearing aids use two hearing aids.
Positive impacts of using hearing aids
In the survey the users of hearing aids stated that there are many positive impacts of using hearing aids.
Especially communication effectiveness, social life, ability to participate in group activities and relationship at home improve with the use of hearing aids.
The survey also found that:
- Hearing aid owners have a lower risk of being depressed.
- Quality of sleep seems to improve if those experiencing hearing loss use hearing aids.
- Hearing aid owners are less exhausted in the evening.
91% of the working hearing aid owners stated that their hearing aids are useful at the workplace. People with hearing aids also recognize that hearing aids increase the chance of being promoted, to get the right job and to get more salary.
96% of hearing aid owners in the survey declared that their hearing aids improve their quality of life in some way.
62% of all hearing aid owners in the survey said they should have gotten their hearing aids sooner. The main reason was missing out on social life.
Hearing test
In the survey, 30% of the participants had a hearing test within the last 5 years. Most of the tests were carried out by ENTs.
Reimbursement
89% of the participants in the survey who use hearing aids received some form of 3rd party reimbursement. 73% of all those experiencing hearing loss in the survey had heard of the reform “100% Santé audiologie” and most of them were aware that hearing aids are fully reimbursed in France since January 2021.
About the survey
The EHIMA EuroTrak France 2022 survey was carried out in cooperation with the Swiss analysis firm Anovum. 14,600 people participated in the survey.
